FactoidItalian-born Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687) was court composer to the all-powerful Louis XIV. Lully used to beat time by tapping a heavy stick on the floor and on one occasion he struck his toe. The resulting gangrene led to successive amputations of toe, foot and leg and his eventual death.
