FactoidThe high voice (counter tenor) is a replacement for the Castrato singer which would often have taken the high part in early performances. The process of castration before puberty ensured the voice remained high and flexible. Many of the most famous opera singers of the 17th and 18th centuries were Castrati, the last great one (Alessandro Moreschi 1858-1922) has been preserved in a recording which still exists today.
