FactoidBeautifully sung here by Grace Davidson. Schubert was only 31 when he died in 1828, just 3 years after writing this work. He had typhoid but died of mercury poisoning which probably meant he had syphilis for which mercury was thought to be the best cure. On his deathbed, Beethoven said "Truly, the spark of divine genius resides in this Schubert!"
