Factoid: Unlike Mermaids, Sirens were said to be malicious and dangerous, attracting sailors with their captivating voices towards the hazardous rocky coast of their island. In Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey, Homer ties himself to the mast to hear the song of the sirens without destroying his ship. This story is where our term, "siren song" originates, referring to a request that is hard to resist but, if heeded, will lead to a catastrophe.
