In 1852 the president of Costa Rica was expecting state visits from Britain and the US, however they didn't have a national anthem so the president assigned the leader of the military orchestra, Manuel Maria Gutierrez, to write one. To ensure the piece was written on time he was locked away for 3 days and it was completed just a few hours before the start of the state reception
