The story behind the sound
Ethan Kaufmann is a Los Angeles-based producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist working with multi-platinum-selling artists from the fields of rock, pop and dance music. Kaufmann’s career began in earnest aged just 17 when his band, The Greater Good, were signed to Lizard King Records, the same imprint that discovered The Killers and Santigold. At 18, he was headhunted to join Ryan Cabrera’s band, and spent several years touring the US with the multi-platinum artist, even appearing in Cabrera’s MTV television series, The Score. In-between touring, Kaufmann built his reputation as a session musician, playing guitar on records by a vast array of artists including Blondie, Avril Lavigne and Fischerspooner. In 2006, he made the leap into production and engineering, initially honing his skills by assisting Jeff Saltzman (The Killers, The Sounds). Today, Kaufmann is one of L.A.’s most in-demand young producers, and a first call for many artists, bands and labels who come to him for his sharp ear, forensic attention to detail and his ability to deliver on a wide variety of genres and production techniques, from rock and alternative to contemporary pop.
